Location
Schiphol (IATA: AMS, ICAO: EHAM) (municipality Haarlemmermeer) is the Netherlands' main airport. Located south of Amsterdam (52°18'31"N, 4°45'50"E), Schiphol is the fourth largest airport in Europe, competing with Heathrow International Airport in London, UK, Frankfurt International Airport in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Roissy, France. It is also often the least expensive airport to fly to. In terms of getting into and out of the airport, Schiphol could be found easy to pass through. It is well organized and has excellent signage. Train tickets can be found in the yellow ticket machines near the platforms at Schiphol Plaza. Make sure you have coins, because the machines don't accept Euro bills. They are also available (for International train too) from the ticket offices, which are situated close to the red/white-checked cube at Schiphol Plaza. Train tickets can be purchased in advance as well either from the ticket machine or from the Nederlandse Spoorwegen-service desks. Just remember on the day of travel to stamp your ticket at a machine on one of the platforms. You can also buy your train ticket for Interational train on the Internet. The trains come into these stations at two levels. If you have to change at one of these stations, your connecting train will depart from another level to the one on which you arrived. The timetables make allowance for this. If you are departing/arriving at night or in the early morning, the NS night network could be your way to draw nearer. The night trains travel once an hour between Utrecht CS - Amsterdam CS - Schiphol - Leiden CS - Den Haag CS - Delft and Rotterdam CS and vice versa. If you need an assistance for disabled persons, at the Schiphol Railway Station there is a lift to take you from the platform to the airport and vice versa. Call the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) if you need assistance at the railways stations of departure and arrival. Telephone + 31 (0)30 235 7822. Or visit the website of the Netherlands Railways.

    History
Schiphol was build first as a military airbase early last century. It has only few barracks and a mudpool which served as platform/runways. When the field began to be useful to civil aircraft, it was often called Schiphol-les-bains. Then in 1951 the Fokker aircraft manufacturer started a factory near the airport. Schiphol's name means "ship hole". It is part of the Haarlemmermeerpolder which was a large lake before that and the name originally meant a part of that lake in the old maps of the area. Schiphol has 5 main runways, plus 1 used mainly by general aviation aircraft. The "fifth runway" (really the sixth) was completed in 2003. The airport is built as one large terminal split into three large departure halls, the most recent having been completed in 1994, which converge again once airside. Schiphol is the world's lowest major commercial airport. The Schiphol ATC tower, with a height of 101 m, was the tallest in the world when constructed in 1991. Its base is actually 5 m below sea level.
