Museums in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has over 50 museums, which draw crowds of tourists each year. By far the most outstanding is the Rijskmuseum, which houses a spectacular collection of Dutch art, which includes many original religious works as well as some masters from the Golden Age with one of the most popular collections being the 17th-century exhibits known as 'The Masterpieces'. This collection includes work by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Vermeer and Jan Steen. Another museum worth adding to your itinerary is the Anne Frank Museum located in the house occupied by Anne and her family during the Nazis occupation. The rooms in the annex where the Franck family and friends hid from German soldiers have been preserved and give an atmosphere reminiscent of those terrifying days. Anne's diary and other personal possessions are also displayed here. The Van Gogh Museum exhibits the world’s largest collection of the old master’s work including the original 'Sunflowers' painting. The collection is organised to portray the many stages in the artist’s life through his paintings. The museum also consist of other Post-Impressionists including Manet, Sisley, Monet, Gaugin and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Amsterdam's Botanical Gardens called Hortus Botanicus were founded as early as 1638 and are among the oldest botanical gardens in the world. At first they were to perform the function of an herb garden where all kinds of medicinal plants were grown. There are over 6,000 tropical and indigenous plants, the highlight of the collection being a 2000 year old agave cactus. In the vast Palm House dating from 1912 you'll find a collection of cycads. The first plants that were exhibited at Hortus Botanicus were grown from seeds brought by traders of the East India Company in the 17th Century.

The Museum het Rembrandthuis, or Rembrandt House Museum, was originally constructed as a house in 1606-07 on the street Sint Anthonisbreestraat, later named Jodenbreestraat. Rembrandt lived in the house between 1639 and 1658. The two-storey house was erected on two lots in the eastern part of the city, the gathering point of many artists and rich merchants. The house was completely remodeled in 1627-28, when it received an additional storey, a corniced pediment and a new facade by Jacob van Campen, who later was the architect of Amsterdam’s Town Hall.
