Grand Place (Marktplaats)
Once considered the most splendid market square in Europe, Grand Place is the main tourist destination in Brussels, set in the very heart of the Old Town. This large square is surrounded by15th-century guild houses, the impressive Town Hall and Broodhuis (Breadhouse). The square's guild houses are rebuilt in lavish Baroque style, including the former workshops and residences of bakers, coopers, haberdashers, peddlers and butchers. Grand Place also hosts many cultural events, including the Ommegang pageant, which commemorates Emperor Charles V's reception by the citizens of Brussels in 1549. This celebration is held each year on the first Tuesday and Thursday in July, and is inaugurated by a majestic procession which begins in the Town Hall.
