Museums in Brussels

Brussels offers the visitor a wide range of museums and art galleries. The Museum of Modern Art displays work from 19th- and 20th-century masters. Works by Belgian artists such as James Ensor, Navez and Portaels adorn the walls alongside that of foreign artists like Vuillard and Gauguin. There are many displays of Abstractionism, Fauvism, Futurism and Surrealism as well as a unique display of sculptures by leading names such as Puvrez, Cantre and Jespers. The Royal Museum of the Army and Military History is also well worth visiting. The museum houses one of the greatest collections of military relics in the world. A highlight of this museum is the collection of World War II airplanes, which includes Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mosquitos. Another noteworthy museum is the Royal Museum of Art, which offers a large collection of modern and ancient art spanning five continents.

The Anderlecht Convent Museum contains a valuable collection of popular art and religious history. The entrance of Anderlecht's Beguine convent permits visitors into an intimate place which once offered rooms to only eight Beguines. Erected in 1252, the edifice is overlooking an internal courtyard closed by two ranges of houses and a well.

The Antoine Wiertz Museum features paintings, drawings and sculptures by Antoine Wiertz (1806 – 1865). Erected in the height of the Léopold area, the Wiertz Museum is devoted to the most important name of the Belgian Romantic Movement. The artist's studio retains its unique atmosphere and contains some of his paintings, drawings and sculptures revealing the influence of great masters, such as Rubens, Michelangelo and Raphaël. Apart from monumental paintings, the interiors are packed with multiple small sketches, spanning varied topics and revealing the artist's visionary claims.

The Archives and Museum of Flemisch Life in Brussels (AMFLB) houses a collection relating to Flemish life in Brussels, which is showcased via an array of posters, letters, books, brochures, annual reports, printed photographs, documents, printing plates, pictures, slides, written testimonies, newspapers, songs, menus, reports, programs, invitations, projects and flags. AMFLB's aim is to introduce Flemish culture in Brussels throught temporary exhibitions.

Autoworld Brussels showcases a 100-year history of automobiles with more than 400 vehicles, displayed in five expositions. The Belgian Centre for Comic Strip Art enjoys an Art Nouveau home designed in the early 20th Century by architect Victor Horta. The building's ground floor is dedicated to both the architect and his time, the late 19th and early 20th Century, a period also coinciding with the first attempts at comic strip drawing. The site's 4,000sq m of exhibition space provides a comprehensive overview of the history of comics, from their origins to the present day. The temporary exhibitions are devoted to a particular artist, trend and topic, or to one of the comic heroes found on the first floor.
