Silhouette Festival in Paris
There's an air of cinematic grandeur to Paris, which has served as a backdrop to countless films, including some of the best and most innovative works of cinema of the 20th century (just think of the pictures of Robert Bresson and Jean-Luc Godard). With such a rich cinematic heritage, it's unsurprising that Paris now plays host to rich roster of film festivals throughout the year. One of these is Festival Silhouette, an outdoor, short film-focused festival held each year in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont. It’s a great venue for a festival – it overlooks the city but is big, wooded and rural enough to feel as though you have somehow escaped the city and are now free of the urban jungle. Another big plus is that all the screenings and additional events are free of charge.
This year's 10th edition, running from the 27th August to the 4th September, is scheduled to screen over 130 pictures from around the globe. The festival has a certain procedure: the evenings kick off with a concert that is timed with sunset and goes on for an hour before the screenings begin. There’s usually two hours worth of short films, all shown outside on an inflatable screen to the festival-goers who can settle in on the grass, bring folding chairs if they please and generally make themselves comfortable for the duration. There’s an interval halfway. Tt’s generally a nice balance of arty and popular – hopefully you won’t be too smothered in all the incomprehensible artistry and will find a thing or two to have a good chuckle at. The opening concerts, too, give new and fresh bands a chance to show their stuff. At the end of each evening the audience votes on the best film, and during the day there are workshops on various aspects of filmmaking.
Getting to the park is a straightforward business: take metro line 7 to either Buttes Chaumont or Botzaris. A couple of things to bear in mind that everyone seems to forget: Firstly, it’s probably going to get a bit chilly in the evenings. Very chilly, in fact, and no one remembers that it’s the end of summer and the nights are not exactly balmy. Bring layers to keep yourself warm, or you might well find yourself having to leave early or risk hypothermia. Blankets wouldn’t go amiss either, and though you can’t just go making fires willy-nilly in the Buttes Chaumont I’m sure nobody would object to a candle or two. Secondly, be aware that the festival has different themes for each night, so having a look on their website in advance to get an idea of what’s going to be on and what will suit you might be a useful idea. Either that, or just go to all of them.
