2012 Year of European Adventure

Europe's travel choices for nomads are richer and more varied than ever before, yet few go beyond the guidebook-advised agenda. Mindful that 'seasonal specialities' and 'one-off experiences' are major factors of 21st-century travel, Europe-Cities.com searched the length and breadth of the continent to find stand-out events and activities throughout 2012 that highlight a unique facet of a popular destination.

JANUARY -  Bagging a Bargain in Barcelona
When it comes to cosmopolitan living and high-end fashion that won't break the bank, nothing beats Barcelona's month-long bargain blitz. To make the most of the seasonal sales (rebaixes in Catalan), browse the designer boutiques of El Born or Gracia districts or elbow your way through catwalk cast-offs at the Roca Village Outlet mall.

FEBRUARY - From Paris with Love
Many visit Paris in the month of lovey-dovey for its swoon-inducing qualities (think a cruise down the Seine or all the evocative cobblestone streets of Montmartre), but its new openings like boutique hotel W Paris - Opera and wine-centric Bistro Albion (80 rue du Faubourg Poissonière), in addition to hot happenings (19 Febr - Carneval de Paris) that charms the heart of any traveller.

MARCH - Berlin's Creative Urban Revival
Berlin, just like the seasons, is constantly reinventing itself, which makes it a must-see during spring thaw, when the vibrancy of new growth, activity and transformation fills the air. See creative urban renewal at its most edgy at Raw Temple, a former train department turned into a hotbed of alternative art, or check out Radialsystem V, a pumping station-turned-progressive-arts-hub pulsing to the beat of new-age sound during the contemporary music festival MaerzMusik (17-25 March).

APRIL - London's Olympic Art
Athletic prowess and national pride aside, London hosts a flurry of cultural celebrations in the run-up to the Olympics. A global tribute to Shakespeare launches the Cultural Olympiad in April, followed by kaleidoscopic profusion of artistic events and expressions that will keep the torch burning until the games begin.

MAY - Helsinki, Where Form and Function meet Future
Reigning as World Design Capital 2012, Helsinki is pulling all the stops to show how innovative design, high-tech solutions and user-driven perspectives are paving the way for a better future. In May, look out for experimental views on Helsinkis' evolution at Virka Gallery, a series of workshops and cultural programmes in the provisional Pavilion, erected between the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum, as well as a week-long celebration of Finnish craft and creativity in the Design District (17-22 May).

JUNE - Get in the Game
You don't have to be a die-hard football fan or face-painting sports supporter to find Warsaw thoroughly fascinating, but if are, then the Polish capital will feel positively heavenly this month as the EURO 2012 kicks into high gear. Besides the action-filled games in the white-and-red riverside stadium, the city sizzles with cultural activities ranging from classical (22nd Mozart Festival, operakameralna.pl) to cutting-edge cool (Orange Music Festival and Night of Praga).

JULY - Adventure, Scandinavian Style
If your dream of outdoor adventure includes windsurfing, speed-boad safaris or paddling in sea-kayak in search of a private island, a trip to Stockholm's southern archipelago should provide the requisite adrenaline rush. The maritime ecozone's 24,000 islands and pristine nature reserves provide ample excitement for independent thrill-seekers, but if guided adventure is more your style then sign up for a package tour with Stockholm Adventures.

AUGUST - Budapest's Summer Festival Fever
As one of the largest music and cultural extravaganza's on Europe's summer festival circuit, Budapest's Sziget festival (Aug 6-13) rolls out a dynamite line-up of crooners from around the globe. Organised on the Hajogyari Sziget (Shipyard Island) for the 18th consecutive year, this week-long extravaganza draws over 400,000 revellers who can indulge in over 1000 programs across 60 venues. This year's headliners include Björk, Stone Roses and Skrillex.

SEPTEMBER - Dutch Foodie Delights
Few cities have honed their hedonistic allure as well as Amsterdam, with its two-wheeling locomotion, savvily-designed fashion and art spaces and diverse culinary scene all oozing good living. To sample upscale Dutch deliciousness, nibble your way through the epic food extravaganza that is Taste of Amsterdam, which brings together the city's newest crop of restaurants and boundary-pushing chefs.

OCTOBER - When in Rome, Cook Like the Italians
If mastering the basics of fine Italian cooking ranks high on your to-do list, then enrolling in a cooking class in Rome will be a big box ticker. Learn the secrets of local cuisine - like how to prepare lasagna with prosciutto, and how to make limoncello - from master chef Fabio Bongianni (www.fabiolouscookingday.com) or cookbook author and culinary instructor Diane Seed (www.italiangourmet.com).

NOVEMBER - Raise a Glass to Beaujolais Nouveau
Winery-hopping through southern France's Burgundy region is the best way to sample the top local tipple - not to mention Beaujolais Nouveau, the first wine of the 2012 harvest, that is festively uncorked at midnight on November 15. Raise a glass of the fast-fermented, fruity wine at the family-owned George Duboeuf Winery, the region's most renowned wine producer that was the leading force behind Beaujolais Nouveau' international marketing (and taste) sensation. 

DECEMBER - Istanbul, in Pursuit of Luxury
Decadent grandeur are visual pizzazz have long been a part of Istanbul's DNA, but the city's emerging appetite for contemporary luxury has given rise to a new crop of ultra-lavish landmarks. Live it up like a youthful sultan by taking a private Bosphorus cruise, relax in the refurbished marble-clad bathhouse of Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam before laying down at the imperial-meets-avantgarde The Hotel House in Galatsaray, a neighbourhood known for its high-end fashion boutiques and art galleries.
