Hungarian Christmas Markets

Towns, villages and cities across Hungary hold their own small Christmas markets, where they sell delicious traditional Hungarian food like strudel, grilled sausages and Christmas biscuits as well as handcrafted goods like warm Hungarian blankets.

The largest and most impressive market takes place every year in the capital Budapest on Vörösmarty Square. The market opens on 29th November through until 24th December. Stallholders sell some extraordinary handcrafted folk art products and traditional Christmas decorations made by members of the Hungarian Society of Folk Arts. At the same time as the Christmas market, the city stages a variety of cultural events from folk concerts to nativity plays – the best takes place between 21st and 23rd December when a Vörösmarty Square recreates Bethlehem with live animals and actors playing the parts of the Holy Family. There is also a Christmas tree decorating competition.
