Italian Mercatino di Natale
Christmas markets in Italy are known as Mercatino di Natale. They take place in most big cities as well as some of the smaller towns and villages. Italian Christmas markets usually contain ornate nativity displays as well as a tasty selection of local produce from food to handcrafted goods.
The market in the capital, Rome at the Piazza Navona is well worth taking in. Santa or Babbo Natale, as he is known in Italy is visible every day and there is a huge nativity scene set up in the piazza. The market starts on December 8th through to January 6, which is the day that the Italian character Befana arrives to dole out coal to any naughty children.
