About Linz
At first glance Linz seems to be a relatively small plain city, hardly a place ranked alongside the most popular tourist spots in Europe. It takes a closer look for Linz to cast its spell on you. Since it was founded by the Romans (based on a castle called Lentia), Linz has been a provincial city, albeit the second largest one in Austria. It is, however, a city at a crossroads leading to both west and east. It enjoyed a brief glory while the Hapsburg Emperor Friedrich III used it for his residence just before his death. Later World War II turned it into an industrial center known for the Hermann Goering Werke (now VOEST ALPINE) and Chemie Linz, currently divided into a number of separate companies. The heavy industries created an unwanted image of the city that it has recently been trying to shed.
