About Aalst
Lying on the river Dender in the province of East Flanders, about 24 km northwest of Brussels, Aalst is famous for onion-growing and for its annual Carnival, taking place in February and featuring the election of a Carnival Prince and a spectacular parade during which dozens of groups in carnival costumes and masks dance in the streets. In the 15th Century, Aalst was one of Europe’s printing capitals, a period commemorated by a statue of Dirk Martens. The town hall is the oldest in Belgium, and its belfry houses a 52-bell carillon. The 15th-Century St. Martin’s Collegiate Church, a masterpiece itself, contains a famous art work by Rubens.
