About Genk
Genk is one of the most important Belgian industrial centres. The SEA Tourist Commission has proclaimed it Europe's friendliest city. A hundred years ago, it was only a small village, but it developed rapidly after coal was discovered in the region at the beginning of the 20th Century. However, the mineral resources were quickly exhausted and the last of the mines closed in the 1980s. Today, the most important industrial plant in the town is the Ford Motor factory. The main tourist attraction of the city is Bokrijk, a museum of replicas of 19th Century constructions from all over Flanders.
