About Kortrijk
A town of about 74,000 inhabitants on the river Lys in West Flanders, 42 kilometres southwest of Ghent, Kortrijk has been famous since the Middle Ages for its textile manufacture. It was also the site of a notable battle, the Battle of the Golden Spurs, between the Flemish guilds and the French rulers of Flanders in 1302. The Church of Our Lady, a stone bridge over the Lys with the so-called Broel Towers, and a splendid Gothic Town Hall are the town’s architectural landmarks and reminders of its Medieval history.
