About Leuven
Capital of the Flemish Brabant province in Flanders, Leuven lies on the river Dijle, and was an important trade center in the Duchy of Brabant throughout the Middle Ages. The oldest university in the Netherlands was founded there in the 15th Century. Leuven is also home to the largest brewery company in the world, InBev, which produces Stella Artois. Today, Leuven is a lively student town, its central part packed with bars and cafes, and has a pleasant Medieval ambience. Architectural landmarks include the Gothic Town Hall, the 15th-Century Church of St. Peter, and the University Library with a splendid tower housing one of the largest carillons in the world. Not to be missed is the emblematic Fonske statue, representing a university student reading a book, wisdom flowing into his head as liquid from a glass.
