About Lokeren
Lokeren is situated in the Belgian province of East Flanders, upon the river of Durme. The area has been settled since the Neolithic era. Romans gave it the name of Waas, meaning 'marshy land.' In the 12th Century, the town received the status of an independent parish and became known under today's name. In 1804, Lokeren was officially granted city rights by Napoleon Bonaparte. Until the beginning of the 20th Century, the town's major economic drive was the textile industry. Today, Lokeren is known primarily for its carillon of 49 bells, installed in 1956.
