About Mons
Capital of the Belgian province of Hainaut in Wallonia, located some 50 kilometres southwest of Brussels, Mons is a town with a rich and eventful past dating back to Roman times, and has many attractions for visitors. Its name means ‘mountain’ (and so does its Flemish name, Bergen), for it is perched on top of a hill in the valley of the river Haine. The town’s most impressive monument is the church dedicated to St. Waudru, a beautiful example of Brabantine Gothic architecture. Inside, visitors can admire the fine alabaster statues and the Car d’Or, a gilded wooden carriage used during the annual Doudou Festival. Apart from the colourful procession, the festival’s other remarkable event is the re-enactment of St. George’s fight with the dragon. The central square of Mons is dominated by the splendid Gothic town hall, which is surrounded by 18th-Century Baroque buildings. The Baroque Belfry is unique in Belgium.
