About Namur
Lying at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse, the capital of the Belgian region of Wallonia traces its history back to pre-Roman times, but actually came to prominence during the Middle Ages when the Merovingian kings built its emblematic Citadel. Today, it is a major industrial center producing metals, glass, porcelain and leather, and also an important railway junction. Apart from the massive Citadel, the town is remarkable for its beautiful 17th-18th Century architecture, the 18th Century cathedral and the popular casino. It hosts two spectacular events: a beer festival at Easter and a war game called the Battle for the Golden Stilt in September.
