About Sarajevo
Sarajevo is the biggest city and the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Situated in a valley surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, it has a population of more than 600,000 citizens. The city is famous for its religious tolerance and diversity – Muslims, Catholics and Jews inhabit neighbouring districts in perfect harmony. Sarajevo is also known for having been the site of the 1914 assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, which triggered World War I. In 1984, it hosted the Winter Olympics. More recently, during the Bosnian War, Sarajevo was subject to the longest siege in modern history, lasting nearly four years.
