About Sofia
Bulgaria's capital Sofia lies at the foothill of the Vitosha mountain. It is an interesting mix of thousands of years of history and the bustle of a modern European capital where the eternal stones of ancient roads and gates lie next to modern administrative and office buildings in concrete, metal and glass. Luckily for its inhabitants, Sofia is a very green city with several large parks and boulevards lined with trees.
The remains of Neolithic settlements show that the area has been inhabited since ancient times. The town's first recorded name was Serdica, after the Thracian tribe Serdi who settled there in the 7th c. B.C. It was called Triaditsa by the Byzantines, and Sredets (meaning "central") by the Slavs.
