About Hvar
Sun-washed and peaceful, fragrant with laurel, rosemary and lavender, the island of Hvar lies just three nautical miles off the Dalmatian Coast. Honey, wine and rosemary oil are its traditional products. Its main town of the same name boasts the earliest public theatre in Europe, dating from 1612. The town is dominated by a 16th-Century citadel perched upon a hill. A graceful Venetian loggia with a clock tower in the town square is all that remains of the former Governor’s Palace. The square itself is the largest in Dalmatia, and is also bordered by the Cathedral of St. Stephen and the Bishop’s Palace. A large 16th-Century well stands in its centre.
