About Korcula
The alleged birthplace of Marco Polo and the first place in the world to outlaw slavery as early as 1214, Korcula is the main town of the Croatian island of the same name, lying just off the Dalmatian Coast. The old city is surrounded by massive walls, and all but one of its streets, which are arranged in a herringbone pattern to protect against strong winds, are stepped. The historical town includes architectural landmarks such as St. Mark’s Cathedral, a Franciscan monastery, the former palace of the Venetian governors, and the fine palaces of wealthy 15th-16th Century nobles and merchants. The most interesting local custom is the performance of the traditional Mediterranean war dance, moreska.
