About Pula
With a population of about 60,000, Pula is the largest town in Istria, lying at the peninsula’s southern tip. Founded by an Illyrian tribe, it flourished as an important Roman settlement, and spent the period from the 12th to the 18th Century under Venetian rule, then served as headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian Navy during World War I, and is today a cultural mixture of peoples and languages. Its most important monument is undoubtedly the magnificent Roman Amphitheatre, the sixth-largest in the world, where performances are still held. Other Roman monuments include the Triumphal Arch and the Temple of Augustus, while the Venetian epoch is reflected in the Communal Palace, the Church of St. Francis, and the Castle crowning the town’s central hill.
