About Rijeka
Situated on the Adriatic Coast, Rijeka is the 3rd-largest city and the major seaport of Croatia. It’s also known under its Italian name of Fiume. Both the Croatian and the Italian names mean 'river'. Rijeka has a total population of about 145,000 inhabitants, and its economy is based primarily upon transport, shipbuilding and tourism. The city is home to the University of Rijeka, established in 1627 and the Croatian National Theatre, Ivan pl. Zajc, built in 1765. Visitors can also see the remains of Giovanni Luppis' factory of the first self-propelled torpedos and the ramp from which his invention was launched in 1866.
