About Split
Dalmatia’s largest city and administrative centre, Split boasts one of the largest passenger seaports on the eastern Adriatic Coast, regular lines connecting it with Rijeka, Dubrovnik and Ancona. A number of Dalmatian islands are also reached from Split’s harbour. Split emerged in the 7th Century around the so-called Diocletian’s Palace, a massive 3rd-Century structure combining the features of a Roman villa and a military camp, built on the order of the Roman Emperor Diocletian for the time of his retirement. The inner city of Split and most of its historical buildings are contained within its walls. Split is one of Croatia’s leading cultural centres, hosting a popular annual music festival and a theatre festival, as well.
