About Pafos
The mythical birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, Pafos used to be the capital of Cyprus under the Ptolemies. The worship of Aphrodite was centered in Pafos, and there was a large temple and an oracle there. The town is also famous for the magnificent and well-preserved mosaics of its Roman villas. Today, Pafos is a popular tourist resort with an attractive harbour dominated by a Byzantine castle, an ancient theatre, remains of ancient city walls, a large necropolis known as the Tombs of the Kings, and interesting early Christian catacombs. The picturesque harbour houses fishing boats and pleasure craft, and is lined with attractive open-air fish restaurants.
