About Hradec Kralove
Located at the confluence of the rivers Elbe and Orlice in Bohemia, Hradec Kralove has been known as the Salon of the Republic for its wealth of architectural monuments. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Czech Republic, and was originally called simply Hradec (meaning “castle”), while Kralove (“of the queen”) was added in the 14th Century when it became a dowry town of Elizabeth, the wife of King Wenceslas II. Elizabeth ordered the construction of the Gothic Holy Spirit Cathedral that dominates the Old Town area. Other architectural landmarks include the Renaissance White Tower, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, the Episcopate Residence and the monumental modern building of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. The town hosts an international theatre festival, a hip-hop festival and a famous international jazz festival called Jazz Goes to Town.
