About Karlovy Vary
Named after Emperor Charles IV, who founded the town in the late 14th Century, Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) in the western part of the Czech Republic has long been famous for its hot springs. The legend goes that the emperor discovered a hot geyser while he was hunting in the area, and having noticed its curative and soothing action, ordered that the place be settled. Since that time, a long list of famous visitors have benefited from the mineral waters of Karlovy Vary, including the Prussian King Friedrich I, the Russian Tsar Peter the Great, G. Leibnitz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Empress Maria Theresia of Austria, Eugene of Savoy, Goethe, Herder, Schiller, Beethoven, Paganini, Wagner, Chopin and Mozart. Apart from the still-flourishing spa trade, Karlovy Vary is also famous for its Moser glass (particularly the Moser inhalers that correspond to six facial types) and the Becherovka bitter.
