About Roudnice nad Labem
A small historical town in northwestern Bohemia, on the river Laba (Elbe), Roudnice traces its origins back to the mid-12th Century. The Brandenburgs, Rozmberksand Lobkowiczs, to mention only the most prominent rulers, left behind beautiful ecclesiastical and secular buildings here. The town’s most prominent architectural monument is the Castle, a 12th-Century Romanesque structure later remodeled in the Baroque style that used to house a collection of masterpieces of world art put together by the Lobkowiczs, and a vast library. The Bell Tower was built in the 18th Century in the place of an earlier wooden campanile, a new home to the original three bells. Little has remained of the town’s Medieval fortifications: a Watchtower that underwent many reconstructions, yet continually served for defense and as a fire alarm. Finally, the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary’s Birth stands by the ruins of an early Augustinian monastery, and contains famous 17th-Century paintings.
