About Strakonice
A small town of 24,000 inhabitants, Strakonice lies in South Bohemia, 110 kilometres from Prague, on the confluence of two rivers: the gold-bearing Otava and the Volynka. Its outstanding architectural landmark is Strakonice Castle, dating back to the 13th Century. For several centuries, it was held by the Order of the Knights of St. John of Malta, which explains the presence of the Maltese cross on the town’s flag. The castle is now a museum. Other notable attractions include Renner’s Gardens, the Church of St. Margaret, the Town Hall and the Baroque Marian’s Column, built to commemorate the plague epidemics. Strakonice is also known as the town of bagpipes, a traditional Bohemian instrument, and hosts an international bagpipe festival.
