About Odense
The capital of Funen Island in Denmark, where Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805, Odense lies close to the Odense fjord, just over an hour by train from Copenhagen. Its name means the Sanctuary of Odin, the supreme god of Norse mythology. The town’s most famous landmark was also related to Odin: the Odin Tower, an observation tower on Bolbro Hill, the second-tallest in Europe (177 m), second only to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower was blown up by a group of Nazi saboteurs in 1944, and a 12-metre-tall replica now stands in its place. The Gothic Saint Canute’s Cathedral is now the town’s tallest building. Andersen’s museum and childhood home attract admirers of Denmark’s most famous writer from all around the world.
