Located on the island of Als in southern Denmark, on both sides of the Als Strait, Sonderborg is a town of 30,000 inhabitants, and has a pleasant old quarter with a small harbour. Its most famous landmark is Sonderborg Castle, first founded in the 12th Century by Valdemar the Great. In the 14th Century, it was the site of the marriage of Valdeman VI Attergadag to the Duke of Schleswg’s sister, Helvig. According to legend, Christian II was held prisoner in the castle’s Blue Tower for 17 years. Today, the castle houses a museum of the area’s history and culture.
