About Vejle
Lying at the inner end of the Vejle Fjord, surrounded by wooded hills to the north and to the south, Vejle has been an important market town since the Middle Ages when it traded with North German towns such as Flensburg, Hamburg and Lubeck, as well as with Norway and the Netherlands. Industry flourished from the 19th Century: wool and metals at first, food production, data technologies and communications more recently. Vejle is a charming town combining a modern harbour and bridge over the fjord, and an ultra-modern sports college with cobblestone pedestrian streets lined with old-time shops and houses. The 13th-Century St. Nikolai Church is the town’s oldest building; also worth mention are Engelsholm Castle with its onion domes and the Fairy Tale Tree, a woodcarving featuring scenes from Hans Christian Andersen’s tales. A windmill on a hill overlooking Vejle is the town’s most popular symbol.
