About Angers
Capital of the historical province of Anjou, Angers lies on the river Maine about 300 km southwest of Paris, and is famous for its massive ancient fortress, its Cointreau liqueur and its magnificent flower displays. First inhabited by a Gallic tribe, the city flourished under Roman rule, and was the cradle of the Plantagenet House of English rulers. The town’s emblematic Chateau was built by King Louis IX in the 13th Century, and today houses the world’s oldest and the largest Medieval tapestry collection. Other architectural landmarks include the 12th-Century Cathedral of Saint-Maurice, the Abbey of St. Aubin, the fine stone building of the Hotel de Pince, and the House of Adam.
