About Biarritz
Located on the Bay of Biscay, just 18 kilometres from the Spanish border, Biarritz was originally a whaling village that rose to prominence in the 18th Century, right after French doctors recognised the therapeutic properties of the local waters. Biarritz became a favourite with royalty and celebrities when in the late 18th century Napoleon’s wife, Empress Eugene, erected here an impressive palace overlooking the beach. In 1901 Biarritz opened a prosperous casino which added to the attractiveness of the place. Apart from the casino, the local Asiatica Museum housing a rich collection of Asia art, the Museum of the Sea – home to sharks and seals, and the Museum of Chocolate are also well-worth a visit.
