About Colmar
A town of about 65,000 inhabitants in Alsace, some 65 kilometres South of Strasbourg, Colmar lies on the river Lauch and is connected to the Rhine by means of a canal. Its sunny and dry microclimate is most favourable for vine growing, and the town is known as the capital of Alsatian wines. The old city centre is very picturesque with well preserved half-timbered houses and narrow winding lanes. The local Unterlinden Museum boasts the famous Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald, painted in 1515 for the Monastery of St. Anthony. Colmar is also known as the birthplace of Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the creator of the American Statue of Liberty, to whom the city dedicated one of its museums.
