About Deauville
Until the mid-19th Century, Deauville was a humble farming village set amidst the marshes and the dunes of Basse-Normandie. Then, however, the Duc de Morny decided to turn the place into an elegant resort for the rich and powerful. A harbour was built, a hotel and a casino were opened, and sumptuous villas mushroomed as the aristocracy swarmed to Deauville to benefit from the ocean’s effect on health. Today, the town is still regarded as the dime of Norman beaches, famous also for its horse breeding and Hippodrome de la Touques racetrack.
