About Nancy
Situated in the region of Lorraine, Nancy is city of about 100,000 inhabitants and a capital of the Meurthe-et-Moselle departement. Owing to its rich iron ore deposits, Nancy has been prospering since ancient times. During the Middle Ages, the city became a proud capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. In the late 19th Century, Emile Galle, a local furniture maker, founded here an association of artists and architects known as the Ecole de Nancy, which turned Nancy into a major art centre. Today many Art Nouveau buildings from that period account for the town's unique ambience. Fine pieces of decorative art and glasswork can be seen at the Musee de l'Ecole de Nancy.
