Located in Southern France just north of Avignon, Orange is one of the warmest towns in France. Orange is also renowned for its Roman monuments: a beautifully preserved Roman Theatre, and a Triumphal Arch built under the Emperor Augustus, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The theatre was restored in the late 19th Century and has since been the site of an international opera festival, the Choregies d'Orange. Displayed in the town's museum are also interesting Roman cadastral maps etched on huge marble slabs.
