About Rouen
Rouen is the second famous over-Seine city, after Paris. Capital of Normandy, it is one of the oldest and most important cities in France. That is why the French Kings have constantly led battles to protect it and win it back. Rouen was founded as a city by the Viking Rollo, right after he became Duke of Normandy, back in the beginning of the 11th century. The town was built on the site of a Roman Rotomagus, the lowest point where a bridge could be built on the river. In the 15th century the city was taken by the English and later became the site of the trial and execution of Jeanne D'Arc. After the end of the 100 years war it was again restored to France. Throughout its history the city has suffered devastating wars and destruction. Yet in the 13th century it was almost completely demolished by several consecutive fires and had to be rebuilt. The two world wars left it in ruins. Allies' bombs destroyed almost half of the city and it has been in course of restoration for the last 60 years.
