About Saint Etienne
Lying in the Rhone-Alpes region some 60 km southwest of Lyon, Saint Etienne was most famous for its arms factory, although ribbon-weaving, coal-mining and bicycle production were also responsible for its industrial development. These traditional industries are attractively presented in the Art and Industry Museum. The town’s historical centre is pleasant and welcoming. Its landmarks include the Grand ’Eglise (Old Church), the more recent St. Charles Cathedral, Town Hall Square with its fountain, and the half-timbered buildings in Place du Peuple. In Saint Etienne, there is a golf course within the town itself, and Saint Victor nearby contains a Castle, a Medieval village and a marina on the Loire. Saint Etienne has a large Museum of Modern Art with a permanent collection boasting works by Picasso, Kandinsky and Warhol.
