About Strasbourg
The City of Strasbourg has been a crossroads since ancient times. Founded by the Romans in 12th century BC, it was later taken by Barbarian tribes and renamed from Argentoratum to Strateburgum. In the German Holy Empire Strasbourg had the status of a free town which greatly enhanced its economic growth. During the Middle Ages a system of covered bridges ("pont couverts") was built to ease trade and defend the town. The River Rhine too encouraged trade and the Old Customs House ("Ancienne Douane"), restored after the Second World War, reminds of those times. Over the centuries the town changed possession by either Germany or France, until General Leclerc's troops entered it in 1944. Currently Strasbourg is the seat of the Council of Europe and also, along with Brussels, the seat of the European Parliament.
