About Toulouse
The earliest settlements in the region of Toulouse date back to the 8th c. BC. Aquitanians were the first inhabitants, who gave the city its name - Tolosa. They were followed by a number of non-Indo-European and Gallic tribes until the Roman Conquest in 125 BC. During the next few centuries Tolosa developed into a major city of the Roman Empire. Although remaining an important crossroads, the city sank into provincial oblivion in the 18th and 19th centuries and saw little of the Industrial Revolution. The 20th century brought a revival through the booming high-tech aerospace industries - the city is the headquarters of Aerospatiale, including the manufacture of Airbus, Concorde, and the Ariane rocket.
