About Tours
Tours lies on the Loire, between Orleans and the Atlantic coast. It's historically famous for the battle that the Franks and an Islamic army fought there in 732. The Franks' ultimate victory prevented further Islamic conquests on the European continent. In the 17th Century, the town was a prominent centre of the silk industry. Architectural must-sees are the predominantly Gothic cathedral and the old quarter with its picturesque half-timbered houses and a myriad of pubs and restaurants serving superb local wine. Tours is also often mentioned as a place speaking the purest variety of French in the entire country.
