About Augsburg
Capital of the administrative region of Swabia in southern Germany, Augsburg prospered as an imperial free city from the 13th to the early 19th Century As part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, it saw major industrial growth in textiles, acetylene, paper, leather, chemicals and machinery, and today is still one of Germany’s industrial centres. Worth visiting is the Fuggerei, a walled complex of housing offered to the poor for a token rent, built back in the 16th Century. Surrounded by a wall, this small city within the city has retained its Medieval look, is still used for the same purpose, and its gates are locked at night. Other attractions include the 17th Century Renaissance Town Hall, the 9th Century Cathedral, and the famous local marionette theatre.
