About Bielefeld
The principal city of Eastern Westphalia, Bielefeld was founded in the 13th Century, became famous as “the town of linen”, and proceeded to develop as a centre of heavy industries and food processing. The town’s best-known attraction is the imposing Sparrenburg Castle, built by the Counts of Ravensberg between 1240 and 1250 and rebuilt many times through the centuries, with a vast system of underground passages and a 37-metre high tower offering a great view on the whole town. The castle is the site of the annual Sparrenburg Festival with its Medieval market. Other major events on the town’s cultural calendar include the Leineweber Market in May and the Bielefeld Wine Festival in September. Further attractions include the Ravensberg Spinning Mill, the St. Nicholas Church, Marienkirche, Old Market Square with the Mercury Fountain, and the Old Town Hall combining elements of Gothic and Renaissance style of architecture.
