About Bochum
Lying in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bochum used to be a major centre of the coal mining and steel industries. As the mines were closed in the second half of the 20th Century, other industries such as car making developed. Bochum is also the home of the first university in the Ruhr area. It is proud of its theatre, reputed as one of the best German-speaking theatres, and of the performances of the Starlight Express musical that have so far been seen by ten million visitors. Bochum is also the site of the world’s largest Mining Museum, a Museum of Modern Art, a Zeiss Planetarium, and a large zoo with a marine aquarium.
