About Bonn
Lying on the Rhine in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bonn was the capital of Western Germany until the country’s reunification in 1990. Relatively small for a capital, it has jokingly been referred to as Bundesdorf (Federal Village). Bonn was the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven. It has the remains of the largest Roman fort known from the ancient world, the ruins of an imposing Godesburg Fortress, and a fine Rococo-style Old Town Hall. There is also a university occupying what was once the elegant residence of the prince-elector. Other famous sights are Germany’s oldest churches (the Bonn Minster) built between the 11th and the 13th Century, and a 162-metre tall Post Tower, headquarters of the Deutsche Post.
