About Dresden
Home to half a million people, the capital of Saxony on the river Elbe has developed as the political, economic and cultural centre of the eastern part of the Federal Republic of Germany since the country’s reunification in 1990. A gem of Baroque architecture boasting vibrant cultural life, Dresden prospered as a major industrial centre until World War II, when a notorious Allied firebombing left the city in ruins and claimed tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of lives. Like a phoenix, the town rose up from the ashes as its citizens invested monumental effort into the reconstruction of emblematic buildings, such as the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger. The city contains a host of other tourist attractions, including a number of castles, the scenic Bruhl’s Terrace, known as the Balcony of Europe, the Albertinum Museum, Volkswagen’s Transparent Factory and the oldest Christmas fair in Germany. Dresden is home to a renowned University of Technology and also to numerous computer and hi-tech companies, earning it a reputation as the Silicon Valley of Germany.
