About Duisburg
Located at the confluence of the Rhine and the Ruhr Rivers in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Duisburg is famous for its steel industry containing all blast furnaces in the area and producing 34 percent of Germany’s crude steel. Tracing the roots of its history back to Roman times, it was a free city during the Middle Ages and a member of the Hanseatic League. Duisburg boasts the largest inland port in the world, annually handling 40 million tonnes of cargo and over 20,000 ships. It is home to one of the leading opera houses in Germany, an internationally renowned Philharmonic Orchestra, and one of the country’s largest universities.
