About Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Located in Bavaria just a few kilometres off the border with Austria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen has some of the best skiing areas in all of Germany. It was the site of the Winter Olympics in 1936, in anticipation of which Hitler forced the two separate communities of Garmisch and Partenkirchen to unite in 1935. The town hosts a traditional annual ski jumping contest, was home to the World Alpine Skiing Championships in 1978, and is due to host the same event in 2011. It is a favourite destination not only for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, but also for hiking – the dramatic scenery of the nearby Zugspitze attracts many tourists during the summer months.
