About Gelsenkirchen
Located in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Gelsenkirchen rose to prominence with the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century, becoming one of the leading coal-mining towns in Europe. Known as "the city of a thousand fires" during its industrial heyday, it was bombed heavily by the Allied forces in World War II, and the decline of coal mining in the post-war years led to one of the highest unemployment rates in Germany. Today, Gelsenkirchen has the largest solar power plant in Germany. It is praised as Germany’s fourth business-friendliest city (after Leipzig, Karlsruhe and Bremen), with a very good infrastructure.
